Though the idea of preventing cataract sounds good, it is not really a possibility. However, you can definitely delay the occurrence of cataract by taking certain precautionary measures such as avoiding ultra violet radiation by staying out of the sun as much as possible and wearing shades every time you step out. It would also help if you quit smoking, went easy on alcohol and included lots of fresh fruits in your everyday diet. Consuming xanthophyll-rich foods such as dark green leafy vegetables have also been found to be of great help in preventing the onset of cataract early on in one’s life.

Yet another way of slowing down the aging process in the eye and protecting it against cataracts is by taking Vitamin E and C supplements that have been prescribed by a doctor. Some studies have also proven that consuming foods such as carrots, pumpkins, sweet potatoes and tomatoes that are good source of Carotenoids also help prevent the occurrence of cataracts.
